Social Studies Game - 13 Colonies Card Game
Using 13 index cards or blank cards, write the names of the thirteen colonial states, one state on each card. Under each state, write its capital, its principal river, and its nickname. For example:
VIRGINIA
Richmond
Potomac
Old Dominion
Thirteen other cards have the names of the capitals first followed by the name of the state, the principal river, and the nickname. See example:
RICHMOND
Virginia
Potomac
Old Dominion
The next thirteen cards will have the names of the rivers first, and the last thirteen cards will have the state nickname first.
The object of the game is to secure tricks consisting of four cards belonging to the same state. The player with the highest number of tricks wins.
Playing Directions:
1. Each player is dealt five cards and the rest of the cards are placed face down in the middle of the table.
2. The player to the left of the dealer asks for a certain card. He may ask for a state, river, capital, or nickname, but he must name the particular one he wants, and he must have one card of that state-set in his hand. He may ask any player he pleases, but he must name the player.
3. If the player asked has the card, he hands it over and draws a card from the deck to replace it.
4. The first player continues to ask for cards until the player asked does not have the card demanded.
5. Then the first player draws a card from the deck and the play goes to the player on his left.
6. As soon as a player has four cards of the same state, he lays them face down in front of him as a trick toward the game.
This game could have many variations. Almost any skill they are working on in math, spelling, social studies, or science could be adapted to this game.
